    Primary Functions This is skilled mechanical work of the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees of this class are responsible for the performance of skilled tasks in repair work on trucks and passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment, such as payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles, and street sweepers. Assignments are given in the form of oral instructions or general written work orders from a supervisor. Work is subject to review through tests and the operating condition of equipment after work is completed. Reports to Superintendent of Motor Vehicles: General Government and or assigned Lead Mechanic III; supervises Team as assigned. Applicants who have a CDL with air brake endorsement may be considered for Mechanic A. ($38.04/hr) Applicants who do not yet have a CDL with air brake endorsement may be considered for Mechanic B. ($34.51/hr) This is a second shift assignment, typically Mon-Fri, 3:00pm - 11:00pm. Typical Duties And Responsibilities MECHANIC A: • Requires a CDL with air brake endorsement. • Performs skilled mechanical work of a difficult and complex nature in the general overhaul and maintenance of heavy equipment; tests, repairs, and reconditions ignition systems, power transmissions, diesel motors, converters, breaks including airbreak, hydraulic systems, air conditioning and heating units and turbochargers. • Diagnoses defects in mechanical and electrical components of automotive equipment utilizing the most up to date technology and equipment. • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems. • Assists in repair work requiring the use of electric arc, acetylene, mig, tig and stick welding equipment including straightening chassis and bumpers, bodies; hardfaces shovel teeth, grader blades and other equipment. • Completes daily equipment repair logs. • Directs work of semi-skilled helpers. • Performs related work as required. MECHANIC B: • Must obtain CDL with air brake endorsement within one year of appointment. • Does general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors and other automotive and mechanical equipment; repairs and replaces shock absorbers, brakes and transmissions; adjusts clutches; checks and balances wheels for proper wheel alignment; repairs and installs hydraulic controls. • Tunes motors using standard testing equipment. • Does diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and repairing generators and starters. • Makes road tests to locate defects in equipment operation and as a check on repair work before the return of equipment to active use; utilizes a variety of common testing devices such as ammeters, volt meters, gauges of various types and other equipment. • Assist in the inspections, and replacement of parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems. • Assists in the repair work requiring the use of electric arc, acetylene, mig, tig and stick welding equipment including straightening chassis and bumpers, bodies; hardfaces shovel teeth, grader blades and other equipment. • Completes daily equipment repair logs. • Performs related work as required. MECHANIC A: EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE • Graduation from high school • 3 -5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trades level, particularly on heavy equipment • Must have CDL with air brake endorsement MECHANIC B: • Graduation from high school • 1 - 3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trades level • Must obtain CDL with air brake endorsement within 12 months of appointment Knowledge, Experience, Skills & Abilities MECHANIC A • Considerable knowledge and a high degree of skill in recognizing, diagnosing, locating and repairing defects in automotive and diesel equipment. • Considerable knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade. • Considerable knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair on heavy trucks and specialized equipment. • Knowledge and understanding of electrical vehicle maintenance. • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, including complex technical instructions and specifications. • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems. • Skill and care in the use of tools and employed in automotive repair adjustment work. • Ability to use a computer including all diagnostic software and online ordering tools.     Job Summary The Setup Mechanic sets up, troubleshoots, and performs preventative maintenance on contact heat and preheat thermoforming machines and support equipment, including, but not limited to case tapes, Big Joe Lifts, and Yushin stackers. The Setup Mechanic may be required to operate machinery when needed.
