see moreJob Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator - Streets operates heavy maintenance and construction equipment and assists the work of a crew who constructs, maintains and repairs streets and storm drainage systems. Once additional requirements are met, Heavy Equipment Operator is eligible to be promoted: Level II - $18.63/hr Level III - $19.63/hr Salary amount offered will depend on qualifications. This is a non-exempt position. Principal Duties And Responsibilities • Operates various types of heavy equipment used to construct, maintain, and repair streets and storm drainage systems, including, but not limited to sweepers, gradalls, tractors, loaders, maintainers, compactors, and various types of trucks. • Mixes stabilized base materials for the street, water and wastewater departments. • Uses pneumatic equipment to compact material in trenches and other excavated areas. Compacts materials such as asphalt and sealcoat. • Removes dead trees and limbs from city rights-of-way using chain saws and related equipment. • Assists in patching city streets. • Repairs streets, curbs and alleys and makes utility cuts. Spreads concrete, asphalt, dirt or gravel in order to make repairs or maintain areas. • Sets up barricades and directs traffic around word areas. • Responds to complaints and work requests from the public. • Prepares worksites & cleans upsites when jobs are complete. • Supervises crew when foreman or crewleader is unavailable. • Subject to after-hours pager assignment and after-hours or weekend call out work. • Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and departmental safety rules. • Regular attendance at work and arrives on time. • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned or as become apparent. • Ability to get along with other employees and the public. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Ability to transport self from building to building. Ability to drive a vehicle and equipment to and from various worksites. Employee will work in extreme temperatures sitting, bending, kneeling, twisting and climbing in order to work or supervise repairs on materials or equipment. Employee can work with mechanical, chemical, electrical and traffic hazards while repairing and maintaining streets. Employee is also frequently required to perform heavy lifting of materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes and odors. Required Qualifications Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge Of Proper Equipment Used In The Repair And Maintenance Of Streets And Storm Drainage Systems. Ability To Operate Vehicles And Equipment Such As Gradalls, Bulldozers, Dump Trucks, Compactors, Chip Spreaders And Loaders As Well As Assorted Hand And Pneumatic Tools. Ability To Read, Measure And Calculate Types And Sizes Of Materials Needed For Repair Of Utility Cuts And Ability To Reason Amount Of Time That Will Be Used In The Process. Ability To Complete Written Reports And Both Carryout And Issue Oral And Written Instructions. Must Demonstrate Proficiency At Operating a Dump Truck And Either a Backhoe Or Street Sweeper As Well As Two Of The Following • Loader • Gradall • Maintainer • Bulldozer Minimum Education, Experience And Certification High school diploma or equivalent required with one to three years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment preferred. Valid Texas Class B Commercial driver's license with a tanker endorsement required. Driving record that meets City guidelines. Personal Protective Equipment Required: (i.e. Safety Boots). Principal Duties And Responsibilities • Operates equipment for street maintenance and drainage repairs. • Mixes and loads stabilized material into dump trucks to be transported to job sites • Assists with the setup of barricades and other traffic control around work sites. • Checks the elevations of ditches and streets to ensure proper drainage and water flow. • Shovels debris and other materials at job sites to complete tasks and clean-up site. • Participates in the maintenance and upkeep of equipment and shop areas. • Read, measure, and calculate types and sizes of materials needed. • Other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work is performed outdoors and requires exposure to inclement weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, and hazardous chemical. May be required to traverse uneven surfaces, climb ladders, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Required Qualifications Knowledge, Abilities and Skills • High School diploma or GED. • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment; OR equivalent combination of training and experience. • Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement within six (6) months of hire. • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances. • Work safety and safety set up policies, procedures, and practices. • Tools, materials, methods, and equipment used in streets and drainage constructions and maintenance. • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines. • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
